What is a Serial Adder?
"serial adder" is a term for a user on a service such as livejournal who adds a large number of users they have no connection with to their "friends list".
What's the motivation?
The purpose of this is almost always to draw attention to their journal, because they know the users added will eventually take notice.
Often, they post offensive materials in their journal, as to incite anger (known on the internet as "trolling").
Other times, it's an advertising technique - they post advertising in their journal, and add usera to their list as to draw attention to the advertisement.
In any case, you can bet a serial adder wants to gain your attention
What can I do about a serial adder?
NOTHING. According to Livejournal's official FAQ Question #139 (Seen here)
ยป Can I force someone to remove me from their Friends list?
"There is no way to force another user to remove you from their Friends list. Adding other users to your Friends list is not a violation of the Terms of Service. It does not allow the user who has added you any special access to your journal; it only allows the user to read your public entries on their friends page rather than going to your journal directly. It does not allow the individual who has added you any access to your Friends-only entries."
"Because adding another user to a Friends list is not a violation of the Terms of Service, the Abuse Team will not take action in this case. If a user is otherwise violating the Terms of Service, please contact the Abuse Team."
The livejournal team does not treat serial adding as either spam or a form of harassment.
Get off my friends list!
I'm not on your friends list. No-one can put themselves on your friends list. YOU are on MY friends-list, which puts me on your friend-of list. You can block me from appearing on your friend-of list by going to the admin console and typing in:
ban_set serialadderinfo
This will both ban me from commenting in your journal and hide me from your friend-of list on your info page.

Why did you pick me?
I didn't 'pick' you. everyone was added randomly. I scanned the list of "lastest posts" from some usernames.

LJ compiles this list automatically. but don't worry, only public entries show up there. If you don't want your posts to appear on this list, you can 'opt-out' of appearing on this list by typing this into the admin console
set latest_optout yes
The moral of the story is: If you don't want your words and thoughts to be publicly accessible, don't go out of your way to make it publicly accessible by posting them on the internet. If you're going to post 'private' things on LJ (STUPID IDEA), at least LOCK your entries:

I'll get back at serial adders by harassing them!
This can get you banned. Remember, serial adding is not against the TOS. The livejournal team will take NO ACTION against it. They will just politely tell you - in so many words - "tough luck, live with it".
Posting harassing comments in anyone's journal, spamming, or stalking them, are ALL against the TOS. If you do these to get back at someone, you will probably be suspended.
In short, there's nothing you can do to feel like you 'got even'. Sucks don't it?
But, wait, isn't advertising agaist the TOS?
Yes, mostly. Only minimal advertising is allowed in one's journal, and that journal must not exist solely for the purpose of advertising. Also, banners and other forms of reselling of your journal space are prohibited. Or so the Livejournal policy claims. However, the Livejournal team contradicts itself with the following policy:
"If journal is created for the promotion of outside commercial activities, and is contained solely within the journal, with no outside advertising or soliciting (such as in comments or communities) and journal does not contain banner ads or other "click-through" promotions: no action required. " (source)
So, if serial adding is used as a means to draw attention to your advertisement, no action will be taken. Bollocks, eh?
These rules are stupid!
If you disapprove of livejournal's abuse policy (http://www.livejournal.com/abuse/policy.bml), then there is a link next to each item that says "comment on this policy" where you can voice your disapproval (as well as approval, or indifference)

Wanna be a serial adder too?
Here's a handy Perl script that will fetch a list of fresh usernames for you.
It will output them in an easy to use format in a file named "lj_namesout.txt".
Then all you have do to is paste that into the admin console and all those names will be added for you automatically!

If your computer can't run perl scripts, go download and install Active Perl. Then copy and paste the above script into a text document and save it as a file named "lj_getnames.pl" and double-click on it, and it will harvest fresh usernames for you!
